A Health Guide To Panic Attacks

By healthexpert On May 10, 2009

The problem with panic attacks is they can originate from anywhere, at anytime although experts do know they are generally the result of anxiety, but why this affects the individual the way it does remains a mystery. Controlling the anxiety which leads to a panic attack may take some time but the trigger to this event must be recognized so a method to stop it from happening can be devised.

Being aware of a situation or condition that preempts the anxiety will mean that eventually, no matter how many times you are subject to the panic attack trigger, the anxiety that is normally felt will no longer be there. No-one should feel that feeling of anxiety so they must know from the outset that the goal is to eliminate the anxiety completely.

While many situations can cause a panic attack and it will be different for each individual, there are certain recurrent themes that are worth noting like feelings of guilt or other feelings of anger perhaps fear and depression about a situation that may have taken place many years in the past. All of these emotions come from one source or generalized place in the brain and they can be categorized as general anxiety attributes and people with GAD (general anxiety disorder) are all too familiar with these feelings.

A specific factor that can cause panic attacks is the work environment especially if it is a stressful position so definitely not a good idea for someone with symptoms of GAD. While some people seem to thrive on this type of stress, others react from the tension by having a panic attack.

The attack results in a person feeling extreme fear and the breathing becomes very rapid with a fast pulse in a condition called hyperventilation where it is not uncommon for thoughts of their own mortality to be overpowering. However, a panic attack can be brought to a safe and quick end by teaching the patient how to control their breathing and as a result what their mind is thinking about.

For example when most people have an attack, they worry uncontrollably so you must learn that if an attack should happen then it is important to go through your breathing exercises. The breathing exercise relies on a regular two seconds breathing and two seconds breathing out, all the time ensuring the stomach is pushed out.

This is an important step as the person consciously controls their breathing then they begin taking control again which is the one thing that a panic attack takes away from the victim. The cause of the problem is the hyperventilation and it is this that must be reduced and the focus should be placed there, which once achieved, the panic attack will subside. Although this should work, some cases are to deeply rooted, then in those instances an appointment with a doctor should be arranged, sooner rather than later.
