Finding Out More About Health Information
There is more information about health out there then ever before. Why, then, are so many of us unhealthy and out of shape? Given all that we now know, or could with a little effort, all of us should be the very picture of health. Sadly though, many of us know next to nothing about the human body and how to keep it working well. The resources are available and if people knew better how to access them and put the information to use, we’d all be better off.
Studies Indicate
All the research indicates that we as a nation are largely ignorant about health and fitness. Medicine, nutrition and the entire general subject of health are something of a terra incognita for most Americans. This is largely because much of the information out there about health is presented in such a way that it is difficult for the average person to grasp and retain. What we don’t know about health is quite literally killing us; a great deal of the illnesses afflicting people are due to unhealthy behavior or the failure to manage emotional and mental health. If more information could be given to people in away that made sense to them immediately, a lot of lives could be saved and better health achieved overall.
While it is easy enough to say “why, if people would just refrain from unhealthy habit x,y or z, then they’d be in better shape”. True, but many Americans are unaware of which lifestyle factors may be good for them as opposed to those that have a deleterious effect on their health. Until we can give easily digested, sound information on human anatomy and health to people, this seems unlikely to change. So what can we do?
World Wide Web Research
So are Americans even trying to get better health information? It is unquestionably out there to be had. There are thousands upon thousands of web sites focusing on various aspects of the topic of health - and given that over half of U.S. households have internet access, most Americans already have a wealth of health and anatomy information literally at their fingertips.
The problem with a lot of health education is that it is posed in such a way that it is difficult to understand. However, many websites take a better approach and present the workings of the human body in a way that makes these natural processes readily apprehensible and memorable: animation. Being able to actually see how the body works immediately fosters greater understanding of how our habits really affect us. Many people remain unaware of the existence of such sources however; if they were aware of them, better health practices would surely follow. These sorts of materials are the same as used by medical students as they learn the intricacies of human anatomy.
For instance, let us take just one part of the body: the endocrine system. This system produces hormones which are integral to a vast number of processes within the human body; almost no organ or system in the body is unaffected by the workings of the endocrine system.
In Summary
A greater understanding of this system, such as could be gained through an animated demonstration could well lead to a better understanding of the relation between stress and health on the part of the public.
